A Knee-Jerk Reaction

In the fall of 1997 (rainy/slippery season), a BMW hit me. Nothing terrible happened, thank heavens.

But this incident indicates that fortune might not exactly be smiling at me; I think it's more like a leering grin at this point.

It had just stopped raining that morning and the streets were wet. I was on my bike and I had the right of way. He was driving a Beemer and didn't see me.

Neither my bike nor his car were harmed, because my right leg was between the two.

Luckily for all parties involved, I was not thrown of the bike (the rain had made the ground so slippery that I was simply shoved sideways into the road) and he was just driving about 5 mph since he was going to make a sharp left turn. Nonetheless, my leg hurt like hell, especially the knee.

The driver got out, asked whether I was all right and what we were going to do. Still in shock, I suggested that since I was still able to bend the leg and to walk, that we just call it luck and continue our respective ways, without involving the police.

"Just be more careful next time," I told the guy.

The Beemer drove away, relieved.

An older woman who had witnessed the event scolded my imprudence. I should have jotted down his license plate! I should have called the cops! I should have sued him! But I was just happy to be alive and feeling reasonably okay, so I let him go.

(I have changed my mind since then. I really should have written down the plate and sued for damages. Damn.)

Of course, the pain didn't just go away, I had to go to an orthopaedist who made me go through physical therapy for almost two months. After that, the leg felt considerably better, but it still hurts at times, most frequently when I'm on my bike or when I sit in one place for a long time.

I guess this is for good I will have to live with it.

(A year and a half later, another car -- this time an Audi -- hit me as I was riding my bike, as chronicled in the Whole Tooth section.)
